There are a lot of companies selling AI services to small businesses right now, and the quality varies enormously. Some are building real systems that deliver measurable results. Others are selling dashboards, demos, and recurring fees for tools you could find free or cheap on your own.
Before you sign anything, ask these three questions.
1. What specific metric will this improve, and by how much?
A good vendor should be able to point to a specific, measurable outcome. Faster lead response time, fewer no-shows, more Google reviews per month, hours per week saved on scheduling. They should also be able to give you a realistic range based on similar clients.
If the answer is vague (“it will improve your customer experience”), that’s a red flag. Not because the claim is necessarily false, but because they haven’t defined success in a way you can hold them to.
2. What happens if I want to cancel?
Ask about contract length, cancellation terms, and data portability. Can you export your customer data if you leave? Is there a minimum commitment? What happens to the automations you’ve built if you stop paying?
The best vendors are confident enough in their results that they don’t need 12-month lock-ins. That doesn’t mean short-term contracts are always better, but the terms should be clearly explained before you sign.
3. Who does the actual work?
Some AI service providers are selling you a platform and expecting you to build everything yourself. Others handle the full setup and ongoing management. Neither model is wrong, but you need to know which one you’re buying.
If you’re paying a monthly fee and expected to do the configuration yourself, make sure you have the time and inclination for that. If someone else is handling it, make sure you understand what “support” actually means when something breaks.
The Bottom Line
AI services should be evaluated like any other vendor relationship: on results, terms, and fit. Don’t sign based on a flashy demo. Ask the hard questions first.
