The AI consulting market is noisy right now. Every agency and freelancer has added “AI” to their pitch. So it’s worth being specific about what a good AI consultant actually does — and what they don’t.

What They Don’t Do

A good AI consultant doesn’t sell you a specific tool. If the first conversation is about which platform to buy, that’s a red flag. The tool question should come after the workflow question, not before.

They also don’t promise to automate your entire business in thirty days. Real implementations take time because they require understanding your workflows, your exceptions, your data quality, and your team’s capacity to change how they work.

What They Actually Do

A good AI consultant starts by listening. What does your business do, where are you losing time, what are the workflows that run every day without variation? That conversation shapes everything that follows.

From there, they identify one or two workflows where AI can have clear, measurable impact — not ten hypothetical improvements, but one or two real ones you can point to in ninety days.

They oversee the implementation: building prompts, testing outputs, training your team, setting up the checkpoints where humans stay in the loop. Then they measure whether it worked and adjust.

What to Look For

Ask any AI consultant you’re considering: what does success look like in 90 days, and how will we measure it? If they can’t answer that question concretely, they’re selling ideas, not results.

That’s the question I answer at the start of every engagement. Let’s talk about your business.
